Kopitareva gradina square is recognised as unused public space in a very urbanised environment where views are limited and directed only on the square itself. The project is based on improving the square and activating the location through enlargement with new educational space. The dance school building emerged from the analysis of the movements across the square, on the basis of the visual directions and ratio between height and density of constructions on the location. The square – dance school relation is established by free circulation through open lobby from where one can use communications to access dancing and socialisation areas. From the program point of view, practice halls are on different levels where accessibility, inter-connectivity and openness is emphasised through amphitheatre communication. Beside their basic purpose, stairs serve as amphitheatre seats directed towards practice halls.
System of landings and connections between them provided interactive space which “flows” and breaks the division between public (square) and semi-public (dance school). Construction of the building is partly based on supporting walls which also serve as visual barrier towards neighbouring buildings and partially on pillars which allow for openness towards various spaces (mainly towards the square so to emphasise their enlargement).
